AMRUT legendary indian Single malt whisky

HUMBLED BY over 65 SIGNIFICANT international awards

AMRUT means "Immortality" in Sanskrit or in ancient Indian texts it means "NECTAR. Amrut is a Sanskrit word which can be translated as "nectar of the gods", "nectar of life", or "drink of the gods".

CLIMATE: Bangalore or Bengaluru in modern India, experiences a tropical savanna climate with distinct wet and dry seasons. The city is situated at an altitude of 3000 feet above sea level and usually enjoys a moderate climate throughout the year. Winter temperatures rarely drop below 12 °C (54 °F), and summer temperatures seldom exceed 34–35 °C.

AGING: Research done in Scotland has shown that Amrut Single Malt Whisky aged in Bangalore, India ages approximately 3.5 times faster than Scottish aged whisky. This is due to the altitude of 3000 ft above sea level and the constant climate temperature of 78 degrees F. If on average an Amrut Whisky is aged for 4.5 years in Bangalore, then it has the smoothness and profile of a Whisky aged in Scotland for 12 - 15 years.

PEOPLE: The company prefers to limit automation in order to maintain jobs at the distillery. A large number of the employees are woman and are considered key income earners in their families.

PEDIGREE: AMRUT was the first Indian distillery to export an Indian Single Malt Whisky produced according to Scotch Whisky Association Standards

CASKS: Amrut buys bourbon barrels from notable American Distilleries, based in Tennessee and Kentucky. Amrut uses both American new oak and used bourbon barrels in its aging process. This is part of Amrut being the missing link between Scotland and Kentucky.

THE BARLEY used in Amrut Indian Single Malt Whisky is 6 row, vs 2 row in Scotland. This results in smaller grains with more flavors and a slightly sweeter taste profile. Barley is 100% Indian grown and comes from Northern States of Haryana, Punjab + Rajasthan.

TIME: Amrut's first Single Malt Whisky made it's debute in Glasgow, Scotland on August 24, 2004. It's first rum was produced in 1950. Amrut Distillieries was founded in 1948 by JN Rao Jagdale and the company is currently operated by the third generation of Jagdale family members.

WHISKY AS NATURE INTENDED

Family-owned since 1995, Blackadder represents whisky in its purest form. Founded by whisky expert Robin Tucek and now run alongside his children Hannah and Michael, this independent bottler delivers expressions that would feel at home in a 19th-century Scottish tavern.

THE CASK IS KING

At Blackadder, they follow one simple philosophy: The Cask is King. Unlike commercial distilleries, they never chill-filter or add artificial coloring, allowing up to 70% of the whisky's flavor to develop naturally from the cask. Their signature "Raw Cask" series even contains tiny fragments of barrel char – visible proof of authenticity that whisky connoisseurs treasure.

BOTTLED STRAIGHT FROM THE SOURCE

Each Blackadder release comes from a single, carefully selected cask, creating expressions that are genuinely one-of-a-kind. From their acclaimed Raw Cask series to their innovative Black Snake "venoms" finished in sherry casks, every bottle represents a unique moment in whisky-making that will never be replicated.

DISCOVER THE DIFFERENCE

What makes Blackadder special isn't just what they add – it's what they don't take away. The sediment floating in your glass isn't an imperfection; it's the signature of traditional craftsmanship. Each sip delivers the authentic character of whisky as it was meant to be enjoyed: unfiltered, undiluted, and unapologetically unique.

TASTE THE TUCEK FAMILY TRADITION

When you choose Blackadder, you're experiencing whisky selected by one of the most respected families in independent bottling. Robin, Hannah, and Michael personally taste each cask, bottling only when it achieves their exacting standards. The result? A dram that tells the true story of Scottish whisky-making tradition.

Robin Tucek

A former journalist with a passion for whisky, Robin founded Blackadder International and created the renowned Raw Cask range. He also co-authored The Malt Whisky File.

Hannah Tucek

Growing up in the business, Hannah keeps the Blackadder team organized. Her appreciation for whisky blossomed after tasting a 30-year-old Glen Ord.

Michael Tucek

After a career as a chef, Michael brings his love for whisky to the family business. With his distillation knowledge and talent for nosing and tasting, he provides concise tasting notes.

RED SNAKE VS BLACK SNAKE: UNDERSTANDING THE DIFFERENCE

VS

WHISKY AS NATURE INTENDED

Family-owned since 1995, Blackadder represents whisky in its purest form. Founded by whisky expert Robin Tucek and now run alongside his children Hannah and Michael, this independent bottler delivers expressions that showcase the raw character of single cask Scotch whisky. Among their most distinctive offerings are two signature lines that demonstrate different approaches to exceptional whisky: Red Snake and Black Snake.

THE TALE OF TWO SNAKES

While both expressions embody Blackadder's commitment to unfiltered, uncompromised whisky, Red Snake and Black Snake represent distinctly different philosophies. Red Snake celebrates the individual character of single casks, while Black Snake showcases the art of careful blending through their innovative solera-style approach. Both lines deliver the authentic taste of whisky as it was meant to be enjoyed: bold, unfiltered, and unapologetically unique.

red snake: single cask supremecy

Red Snake represents the purest expression of individual cask character. Each release comes from one carefully selected first-fill ex-bourbon barrel, chosen only when the Tucek family determines it has reached peak maturity. Every Red Snake is numbered and represents a unique moment that will never be replicated. The result is a delightfully fruity, sweet single malt that showcases the marriage between exceptional distillate and premium American oak.

Black snake: the art of vatting

Black Snake takes a different approach, utilizing Blackadder's innovative solera-like system that combines multiple exceptional casks into harmonious blends. Enhanced with carefully selected sherry cask finishes, Black Snake expressions deliver complex layers of flavor that evolve with each sip. This method allows for consistent quality while maintaining the distinctive character that makes each release special.

the blackadder difference

What unites both Red Snake and Black Snake is Blackadder's unwavering commitment to traditional methods. Neither line uses chill-filtration or artificial coloring, allowing up to 70% of the whisky's flavor to develop naturally from the wood. Many releases feature the signature "Raw Cask" treatment, complete with barrel char and sediment – visible proof of the authentic, unmanipulated whisky within.

CHOOSE YOUR ADVENTURE

Whether you prefer the singular character of Red Snake's single cask expressions or the complex harmony of Black Snake's expertly vatted blends, both lines deliver the uncompromising quality that has made Blackadder a favorite among whisky connoisseurs. Each bottle tells the true story of Scottish whisky-making tradition, selected by one of the most respected families in independent bottling.

A DRAM HUNTER SELECTION USA EXCLUSIVE Bottled October 2022.

This whisky is from a Vatting of casks of Single Malt Whisky. It has been finished in an Oloroso Sherry Butt - bottled without chill-filtration and there is no added color.

Black snake starts its life in first-fill ex-Bourbon casks. We then put three of them into new Oloroso or PX Butts and leave them for about a year for further maturation before bottling two-thirds of each cask. We call these casks 'Vats' as they are a kind of mini Solera.

After each bottling, we add two more ex-Bourbon casks, always of the same whisky, and leave for around a year before again bottling two-thirds of the Vat. All future bottlings from each vatting of Black Snake will therefore contain some spirit that was in the previous expressions from the Butt. From time to time the Butt is renewed.

Each time we bottle we call it Venom, as in the poison from a snake's bite. The first bottling from each Vat is called First Venom, and the second bottling is called Second Venom, and so on.

PEAT REEK RAW CASK FINISHED IN RECHARRED CASK

Blackadder's Peat Reek, Recharred Finish, is an exclusive 10 year old single malt scotch whisky. This exclusive USA release is a Glass Revolution Dram Hunter selection, with only 340 bottles available.

Peat Reek is the smell of burning peat, the flavours of which are imparted to malting barley as it is slowly dried while the smoky reek of the peat is drawn over it. For Blackadder Peat Reek, we select only casks of whisky produced using malted barley that has been heavily impregnated with the phenols and creosols of a gently-smouldering peat fire. On the front label, you will see that this offering has an official analysis of 21.2 PPM -which lets you know just how peaty your dram is!

Peat Reek Embers are specially-selected casks from our already well-known Peat Reek portfolio. These are casks that we feel stand out from amongst a selection of which we are already very proud. This in no way means we think they are better than others in the Peat Reek selection. All have the heavily-peated quality that is a hallmark of Peat Reek, but some of the Embers range have been given cask finishes selected to help further complement the whisky. As with the burning embers of a fire, the finish lingers long after the last sip.

The name "Mannochmore" is derived from two Gaelic words: "mannach," meaning monk, and "mor," meaning big. This name refers to the site's history, as it was once home to a religious settlement and a religious figure's name was given to the location.  The Exploration series focuses on single-cask releases with quality and accessibility in mind. Due to its royal warrant and limited production, Royal Brackla whiskies are highly regarded and sought after by whisky enthusiasts and collectors. They are often considered a hidden gem among single malt Scotch whiskies, offering a unique taste experience with a touch of royal heritage. In 1835, King William IV granted the distillery the right to use the "Royal" prefix in its name, making it Royal Brackla. Located in the Highlands of Scotland, the distillery is close to the Cawdor Castle. The castle has strong connections to Shakespeare's play "Macbeth" and is often associated with royalty and Scottish history.

Single malt Scotch whisky distilled in Orkney - though the exact distillery has been left a mystery! Very often from the flavor notes and the name given to the whisky in question, a lot can be deduced! The coordinates on the bottle can be typed into google maps to give you a clue where this whisky was distilled. Aged in a single hogshead for 8 years. The result is notes of honey, light peat, and toffee apples. Have fun with this tasty puzzle.

Shizuoka:

The Truest Japanese Whisky

In a world awakening to the nuanced artistry of Japanese whisky, Shizuoka Distillery emerges as a beacon of authenticity and innovation. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail and an unwavering commitment to its Japanese roots, Shizuoka offers a whisky experience that is both profoundly traditional and refreshingly unique. This is not just Japanese whisky; this is Shizuoka – a testament to the true spirit of Japanese craftsmanship, distilled entirely in Japan with distinctive production choices, creating whiskies that are unmistakably their own.

The Shizuoka Difference:

Authenticity Forged in Fire and Tradition

Shizuoka produces only genuine Japanese whisky — no imported spirit, no blending with foreign liquid. Every stage, from milling and mashing to maturation and bottling, happens on-site in the Shizuoka prefecture. The result: complete control over quality and authenticity.

A Tale of Two Stills

  • Pot Still W – A rare, direct wood-fired still fueled by local cedar and cypress, imparting a subtle smokiness and robust depth.

  • Pot Still K – A historic, steam-heated still salvaged from the legendary Karuizawa Distillery, producing spirits with refined elegance.

This dual approach allows Shizuoka to craft a wide range of flavor profiles with remarkable complexity.

The Taste of the Land

Shizuoka pioneers the use of 100% locally grown barley for select expressions, capturing the essence of its terroir. Additional malt varieties, including Scottish peated and unpeated barley, add breadth to their range. Fermentation takes place in traditional Shizuoka cedar washbacks, enhancing the spirit’s aromatic character.

Water from the Okushizu Highlands

All production uses soft, pure water from the Abe Nakagouchi River, which flows through the lush Okushizu region. This pristine water source is key to the clean, expressive nature of Shizuoka whisky.

Maturation with Character

A diverse cask program — from ex-bourbon to sherry — shapes each whisky’s depth and complexity, with a minimum of three years’ maturation in Japan’s varied climate.

Certified Authenticity

Shizuoka fully complies with the Japan Spirits & Liqueurs Makers Association (JSLMA) regulations for “Japanese Whisky,” ensuring:

  • All ingredients sourced from Japan

  • Full production and maturation within Japan

  • Minimum three-year aging in wooden casks

  • Bottling in Japan at a minimum 40% ABV

This guarantees every bottle is a true product of Japan’s whisky heritage.

Hallmarks of Shizuoka

  • 100% Japanese, in-house production

  • Rare wood-fired still & historic Karuizawa still

  • Locally grown Shizuoka barley

  • Cedar washback fermentation

  • Pristine Abe Nakagouchi River water

  • Transparent, certified authenticity

In the Glass

Across expressions, expect:

  • Nose: Citrus, orchard fruit, malt sweetness, vanilla, cinnamon, with possible hints of honey, florals, or soft smoke.

  • Palate: Smooth, viscous texture with layers of caramel, fruit, spice, and malt richness — occasionally nutty or earthy with local barley, or subtly smoky when peated malt is used.

  • Finish: Medium to long, with lingering sweet, spicy, and oaky notes.

We invite you to explore individual bottling notes for specific expressions, as each tells its own unique Shizuoka story. The journey of discovery is part of the pleasure.

Made with 100% domestically grown barley

Pot Still W is a single wash still whisky, made solely from the distillate produced by Shizuoka's initial distillation machine, Pot Still W. Japanese Barley 1st Edition marks the first bottling that uses 100% domestically grown barley malt as its raw material. Since its operation began in 2016, the Shizuoka Distillery has been brewing using domestic barley malt. While domestic malt is more expensive than foreign malt, it produces a delicate and sweet flavor. Please enjoy this Japanese whisky, a harmonious blend of the smoothness of direct wood fire and the lightness of Japanese barley.

There are only a limited number of direct-fire distillers worldwide, and among them, wood-fired distillers are unique. Local woodcutters split the thinned coniferous trees that overflow from the rich mountains of Shizuoka into firewood. Reviving distilling techniques from over 200 years ago, this whisky was distilled by burning wood. Today, most of the malt whiskies made worldwide do not specify the origin of barley.  However, there is a rising demand for Distillers to use locally sourced ingredients. For this 100% Japanese Barley First Edition, Shizuoka prepares whiskey separately for each barley production area and makes whiskey that allows you to feel the terroir.

It is an item that pursues a new Shizuoka style, with a gentle mouth opening and a gradually strong peaty feel.

*Although this product uses imported ingredients, it is a "Japanese single malt whiskey" that meets the Japanese whiskey standards set by the Japan Brewers Association.
